Excellent Long-term Durability
1) Is this really stone?
Yes! The SpreadStone Mineral Select Kit is made with a modified blend of stone and mineral ingredients. With SpreadStone you are not “painting.” You are RESURFACING WITH STONE TO CREATE A WHOLE NEW STONE SURFACE.
2) What comes in the kit?
The kit comes with ALL REQUIRED COATINGS AND APPLICATION TOOLS to perform a standard installation on laminate. It even includes sandpaper and a quality dust mask. The only items you would need to supply are painter’s tape to mask off edges and drop sheets to protect your floor and cabinets.
3) How much area does one kit cover?
Coverage rates for the Mineral Select kit run between 30 and 40 sq.ft. To be safe, when planning for your project, base your ordering on 30 sq.ft. just to ensure you have enough.
4) What surfaces will this adhere to?
The SpreadStone Mineral Select kit is very versatile and can be applied to all kinds of surfaces. Resurface your existing laminate-type countertops, cultured marble, solid surface countertops, concrete, tile and more.
5) How do I coat a tile countertop?
If you want the grout lines to be filled so that they are flush with the rest of the surface before applying your new countertop finish. Use more grout, thinset mortar or other suitable filler to fill the indentations and let it cure fully before proceeding. Next, cover the entire surface with a thin coat of Daich ElastoLock® (one quart is usually more than enough), which will effectively adhere to smooth tile and create a uniform bonding surface. Let it dry until the following day, at which time you can proceed as directed with the countertop finish of your choice.
Alternatively, if you want to coat the tile surface but leave the indented grout lines for an embossed stone tile look, simply coat the entire surface with ElastoLock to bind to the grout and tile and proceed with the Mineral Select system they following day.
6) Can I refinish my cultured marble or solid surface countertop?
Yes! Scratch up the surface with steel wool and then wash it thoroughly. When it is dry, cover the entire surface with a thin coat of Daich ElastoLock®, which will effectively adhere to the surface and create an optimal bonding surface. Let it dry until the following day, at which time you can proceed as directed with the countertop finish of your choice.
7) Can I install onto a wood surface?
Yes, wood surfaces like tables and furniture and also newly constructed plywood surfaces are finished with the SpreadStone all the time. Specific woods would include clean and dry plywood, MDF, particle board, pine, and various hardwoods. Certain woods which may be subject to colour bleed should be pre-coated with a stain-blocking primer. Otherwise, the surface should be free of coatings or, if coated, free of any peeling and weakness. All surfaces should be lightly scuffed and wiped clean prior to application of a thin coat of Daich ElastoLock®. Let it dry until the following day, at which time you can proceed as directed with your new Mineral Select finish.
8) Do I need to be artistic to get a good result?
Not at all! With SpreadStone Mineral Select you don’t need to be creative with complicated faux finishing techniques or weird tools to worry about. This is stone re-surfacing technology that lets you roll a real stone layer right over your existing surface — as easily as painting.
9) Is the SpreadStone finish durable?
Yes it is! The SpreadStone Mineral Select system is a hard stone surface that stands up to daily use, hot pans, stains and non-abrasive household cleaners. It can last for many years with only the need for an occasional fresh clear coat application every few years to keep your surface looking like new.
10) I have noticed that there are different levels of smoothness in the SpreadStone kit finishes posted online by different users. Some look lightly textured, while others are very smooth. How do I get the level of smoothness I want?
It all comes down to the stone polishing step you perform after the stone coatings have dried. The sandpaper included in the kit is specially selected to shave down the rough stone surface to your desired texture. You can leave the surface with a more organic, softly textured natural stone texture — or sand it down a bit more until it is very smooth. For easiest and fastest sanding/polishing, we recommend you use an electric palm sander.
11) Do the products smell bad?
Not at all. The entire SpreadStone system is practically odorless and safe to use.
12) Can I apply more coats of the clear coat to build it up more? Yes, you can apply as many coats as you wish. After the first two coats, allow 6 – 8 hours between subsequent coats in warm, dry conditions.
13) Can I coat my backsplash?
Yes, just employ the same techniques.
14) How long can I wait between steps? I would like to do my project at a slower pace.
You can take as long as you like between steps (from days and weeks to even months). There is no mandatory schedule because all the steps are naturally air dried coatings that work at YOUR SCHEDULE. Just keep the surface clean and dust-free between coats.
15) How soon can we use our new countertop?
After clear coat application, wait until the following day to resume use.
16) How do I fix the surface if it is ever damaged?
if there is ever minor damage to the finish, it can usually be fixed in minutes using a little low grit sandpaper…
17) What if I have some left?
It’s not an epoxy product, so there’s never any waste. Just close the can and save it for later. Use it on a table, vanity, bartop or other surface.
18) Can I change the color of the surface if I want to?
Yes, absolutely! One great advantage with SpreadStone is the total freedom it brings to you. You can switch to a completely different color of stone surface whenever you wish to match a new desired color scheme, furniture and decor. Just lightly scuff the existing surface and apply your new stone surface right over top of the old. No need for construction, no spending thousands for a whole new look — and no feeling stuck with what you spent thousands for in the past!
